The scheme’s alleged ringleader, Yury Chernega, DC, 50, of Studio City, is facing an additional counts of money laundering. The charges include allegations of taking more than $500,000 from about 30 auto insurance companies through embezzlement and fraud.
Yuri Chernega was charged in May 2019 with organizing 15 other doctors in a similar scheme defrauding $6.5 million from auto insurance carriers.
From 2014 through 2019 Chernega referred new patients who were in car accidents to other chiropractors in return for an illegal referral fee, Prosecutors say. Court documents state that Chernega netted about $2.5 million through the scheme.
Chernega and the other defendants are also accused of filing false claims for medical services they did not provide.
