Most advanced countries have safer roads and lower auto death rates. But the US has over 40,000 traffic deaths in the last several years. Of course, Americans drive a whole lot more than everyone else and people not in a car can become victims.
Nexstar reported October 22, 2023, that the number of pedestrians killed in MVA’s is surging. In fact, it is the fastest growth rate for MVA’s.
In 2022 alone, at least 7,508 people were killed by drivers, according to the GHSA. Between 2010 and 2021 the number of pedestrians killed increased by 77% while all other traffic related deaths increased by 25%. Bicycle deaths are also increasing.
The common causes are: drunk driving, “blind spots” in front of some vehicles hoods when the driver cannot see over their hood, and careless drivers, large trucks, crossing in the middle of a street, wearing dark clothing at night, playing in the street, and careless walking.
With more technology than ever, the MVA death rates are climbing fast.
