Omar Abdullah sued the City and County of San Francisco and the Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehab Center.
Omar is a 37-year-old resident with the cognitive ability of a 7-year-old. He suffers from anoxic encephalopathy and is wheelchair-bound. Because he is non-ambulatory, he depends on staff for assistance - including walking, using the toilet, hygiene, and grooming.
On June 28, 2019, the California Department of Public Heath alleged that 23 patients at Laguna Honda were victims of systematic abuse, including physical and verbal abuse, violations of privacy, and chemical restraint in the hands of six employees. The Abusers took photos and videos of themselves engaging in the abuse which also included sexual and physical abuse.
Omar’s family conducted their own research and found texts showing that Omar was on the floor getting kicked by staff.
The jury awarded Omar $800,000.
San Francisco Superior Court, Abdullah vs. City and County of San Francisco, Judge Samuel Fend presiding.
