New Yearâs Resolutions! Now is the time of year to resolve (for next year) to bill only the amount you could comfortably stand behind and demand 100% payment and work with attorneys who will actually pay it to you.
We received a very sad email from a doc asking if they can put a provision in their lien saying they wonât accept less than a 50% reduction on their bill. This is problematic for two reasons:
- It is illegal to bill an amount you donât intend to be paid. Itâs insurance fraud. If you put that right there in your lien, you will get caught and it will not be pretty.
- (And most importantly) you shouldnât have to put such a provision in your lien.
Reasonable, ethical billing practices + reasonable, ethical attorneys = getting paid what youâre worth (100%...most of the time). This New Year, resolve to bill every PI case like you might have to stand in front of a judge and explain why you should be paid every penny of it, and then resolve to only work with attorneys that, for the most part, will pay it to you.
Remember, your services are only worth what you can get paid for them. Donât cheapen the value of your expertise by accepting huge reductions over and over again. Cheers to a great 2023!
