With significant political overtones, the LA City Council voted to authorize a study that aims to limit how often motorists are stopped for low level traffic violations.
Sounds like a good idea... except it may not be.
The council wants “pretextual” traffic stops ended. When a driver is suspected of a crime, police officers can pull over that driver for breaking a less serious traffic law. Police sometimes find guns and drugs in the car that are clearly visible.
Fortunately, Oklahoma didn’t have that law and stopped Timothy McVeigh when he was fleeing the scene of the Oklahoma City bombing. McVeigh was stopped for a traffic violation.
The roads in LA have never been more dangerous.
Traffic deaths achieved a record high last year with 336 people killed in crashes --- up from 312 in 2022, more than the number who died in homicides. More than half, 179, were pedestrians.
Many more pedestrians and bicyclists are maimed and can suffer life-changing injuries. Only to be made worse by the California legislature that has legalized jaywalking. The Freedom to Walk bill will surely kill many more pedestrians.
According to the Office of Traffic Safety, pedestrian deaths account for just over a quarter of all state traffic fatalities. We are seeing more pedestrian injuries than ever in California’s history.
PRO TIPS
- Most pedestrians will get coverage from their own car insurance policy IF they are stuck by another car.
- That coverage includes Med Pay and Uninsured Motorist.
