A doctor recently told me of a PI case in which an attorney was pressuring him to send the patient for MRIs when he felt there was no medical necessity to do so.

This brings up an interesting issue. On the one hand, attorneys are not doctors and should not be pushing patients or doctors toward treatment. On the other hand, a PI case with no imaging (and no referrals) is not a good PI case and the DC is very likely not going to be paid in full on their lien.

The answer here is good communication with the PI attorney from the very beginning. If I learn that a doctor believes the injuries their patient sustained in an MVA are so minor as to not warrant any imaging or referrals, it is my job to suggest that they make that a cash patient (or bill med pay or insurance directly). And should that patient then decide to get an attorney who is willing to take such a case, the DC should be exceedingly leery of treating them on a lien less they are operating a free clinic.
